How Often Should You Change Your Baby’s Diaper?

Caring for the hygiene of the little baby is a very important duty for parents. Especially because the baby’s skin is delicate and easily irritated. Hygiene in areas hidden by the diaper should be emphasized because of this reason. How often and how are parents supposed to clean little ones during diaper changes in order to maintain their hygiene?

I have an answer for you.

Every baby is unique, and how often your little one “goes” can vary from day to day. The general rule of thumb when it comes to how often you should be changing diapers is about every two to three hours if your baby is a newborn, and less frequently as baby gets older.

Let’s say in the first 3 months of baby’s life, you will change diapers every 2 hours. There are 24 hours in a day, so roughly you are changing 12 diapers.

Then there is the question about the wipes to clean the baby. What kind of baby wipes are you using? Store brand wipes that generally contain chemicals, or are you using all natural wipes?

For each diaper change you can expect your baby to require an average of 1 baby wipe for each wet diaper and up to 10 baby wipes for a “fully loaded” diaper – especially if you are new to changing diapers.

With 12 diaper changes a day, the number of baby wipes required can be quite high in the early stages. Assume that out of the 10 diaper changes, 6 will be wet and 4 will be fully loaded diapers (soiled).

So, when you do the math, you can be going through as many as 46 baby wipes per day in the first 3 months alone.

What most parents overlook: when wiping the baby with these 46 baby wipes a day, you are also applying chemical preservatives to your baby’s skin 46 times a day. That is 4,140 times just in the first three months! Baby’s skin is thinner and more delicate than an adult’s skin, and they absorb these chemicals much faster.

What’s the most important thing to look for when picking the right baby skin care product and baby wipes?

There’s an overwhelming amount of information and products out there when you have a baby, isn’t there?  You need to make decisions about so many new things, from the pram and the bassinet, to their clothing and toys. Then, what about the dizzying array of lotions and creams for your baby’s skin?

You might even be wondering what to put on your own skin as a new mum, especially since your baby will be snuggled up to you for MANY hours a day.

A baby’s skin is incredibly sensitive and delicate, and does not function as a normal barrier like adult skin does. Therefore, what we want to put on a baby’s skin is gentle, and free of irritants and artificial ingredients that will further dry their skin out.

How to best avoid harmful ingredients in your baby skincare? Just look for water/aqua/eau. If you find this ingredient  in your baby’s products, then you already know that there are harmful chemical preservatives inside.

Best to choose SAFE, water-free diaper cream and wipes because products that contain water must contain chemicals. And you know that chemicals can do bad to your baby.
