If you’re having a difficult time with symptoms during menopause, you may find it helps to avoid certain “trigger” foods and drinks.
So, what are the five foods you should completely avoid during menopause?
First, we’ve got sugar.
Sugar and menopause don’t mix well. As the hormones estrogen and progesterone are fluctuating, the body also has to work harder to manage blood sugar levels. Consuming too much sugar can also worsen menopausal symptoms.
Second, alcohol.
Alcohol can actually interfere with your sleep and may make your hot flashes, anxiety, and/or depression worse! Alcohol consumption can also cause you to gain weight during this period.
Third, coffee.
Caffeine really does a number to you during this transition. We’re very sensitive during this transition, and it’s a stimulant. One study found that found that menopausal women who consumed caffeine were more likely to have hot flashes than women who didn’t consume caffeine!
Fourth, spicy foods.
Spicy foods are known to trigger sweating, flushing, and other symptoms of hot flashes so you should want to stay away from spicy foods, especially if you’re having hot flashes.
Fifth, processed foods.
This includes packaged foods like salty chips, cookies, candy, basically anything that’s processed. These foods might taste good, but they’re usually high in sodium and loaded with added sugars, which can make you retain water and feel very bloated.
A diet full of natural, whole foods, that is high in fruits, vegetables, and high-quality protein may help to reduce menopause symptoms. Phytoestrogens and healthy fats may also help, too!
